Love in the everyday February 10, 2010

Have you seen the trailers for the film Valentine’s day? Patrick Dempsey is looking mighty fine indeed.

As valentine’s day draws near, it’s been hearts all over my favourite blogs. Which makes me happy and warm inside, because I believe in love, which is the greatest of all. But I must admit that I don’t subscribe to the over-commercialisation of the holiday (case in point: the Dempsey movie). For me, love is also in the everyday. Big gestures and special occasions always puts me on a joyful high. However, it’s extra meaningful when love manifests in little, small everyday gestures outside of the holiday. Because, that’s when you know it’s real.

And speaking of gestures, check out this incredibly hopeful story of how one guy went out of his way to find a girl. I thought it was wonderful how he just knows he has to meet her again and plastered his email on a wall at a public subway station. Now, love takes courage!

And here’re a few pictures that captures the holiday beautifully for me:

I love the quirky gift ideas from somethingshidinghere:

This one’s the sweetest:

And finally, one of my all-time favourite quotes from Love Actually:

“Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge – they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaking suspicion… love actually is all around.”

Happy Valentine’s darlings 🙂

The Joy Luck Club February 5, 2010

Today, I woke up at noon feeling like a relaxing Friday stay-in. I made my favourite kind of breakfast (a simple egg sandwich with forest fruit tea), picked a DVD, propped my lazy feet up and watched the The Joy Luck Club.

I loved the film, it was very thought-provoking. It made me better understand the bond I shared with my grandmother, my relationship with my mom, our history and traditions and most of all, the hopes mothers have for their daughters. Funny thing is, like the girls in the film, there are moments when I think my mother doesn’t know me but the heart of the matter is that they have so much age-old wisdom and they see us in ways that we think they don’t, and in a light that we may not even recognise ourselves.
