Julie (Juliet’s sis) shared this recently and I love it so much that I listen to it in the car, at work, at home, read: all the time. Frank Maroney also does a really good cover of ‘Someone like you’. I’d buy his CD in a heartbeat.

I actually prefer this to Roxette’s original.

There are a thousand reasons
Why I should give up
But I’m stubborn in the things I believe

– Everything in its time by Corrinne May

I was driving to school yesterday when ‘Everything in its time’ by Corrinne May started playing on my iPhone. The lyrics always speak to me. It takes a huge dose of courage to be honest with yourself  and to listen to what your heart says. Sometimes it takes guts to abandon a well-beaten path and to forge your own – to find yourself, to build your own happiness.

And on a completely unrelated but happy note, I discovered this really beautiful video on youtube. I love the fairy lights and Kelly Overton is quite a stunner!

You set it again, my heart’s in motion

Every word feels like a shooting star

I remember gushing about Adele’s ‘Make you feel my love’ to Juliet on an extended toilet break while studying in the library in Nov ’09. I barely knew the J then, but I’m glad she didn’t think I was a psycho gibbering away to her in the bathroom. I also remember listening to the song on loop in Dec ’09 and thinking about a certain someone. Then last year, in Dec ’10 I heard the song play in a Pizza Express outlet in Holborn, London. We’d just finished our final class of the semester at CTLS and were headed out for lunch. Christmas was just round the corner, the atmosphere was festive, the decorations were up and we were in the middle of happy chatter when I heard the opening piano chords. That was one single moment of peace and gratitude that I’ll be content to remember by. A year ago in ’09, I’d just submitted my application for exchange and was missing someone. A year later, I was still on my own but I found a happiness from my independence and a comfortable rhythm that I’d fallen into while living in a fast-paced, charming city away from home.

Funny how, one song can uncover, from the recesses of your brain, so many memories. What is one song you associate with a moment or remember by?

Where there is love January 10, 2011

Where there is love the heart is light,
Where there is love the day is bright,
Where there is love there is a song
To help when things are going wrong,
Where there is love there is a smile
To make all things seem more worthwhile,
Where there is love there’s a quiet peace,
A tranquil place where turmoils cease
Love changes darkness into light
And makes the heart take “wingless flight” –
Oh, blest are they who walk in love
They also walk with God above,
And when man walks with God again
There shall be Peace on Earth for men.

– Helen Steiner Rice

I really like this poem by Helen Rice, it’s one of those poems that brings my heart and everything else to a still. It fills me with a quiet sense of gratitude.

Today, my little happy moment was when I got 5 lobster puffs and 3 egg tarts for 5 dollars from the Marine Parade Hawker Centre. They were deliciously yummy! I decided to treat myself on the first day of school. While it’s bittersweet to be back home in Singapore, for everything there’s a season; I’ve had plenty of time to enjoy, explore and discover in the last 5 months. Now it’s time to return to school and to do the best I can for my final semester (and not sleep walk through it as I’m inclined to do).

Accompanying this poem is a cover of one of my favourite songs – “Your Song”. While I was on the long, cold journey back from a day of jam-packed shopping at the boxing day sales in London, the song came on and I remember being momentarily blown away (not by the wind, but by the song of course).

Where there is love, there is a song

To help when things go wrong…

Happy new year lovelies! Here’s to peace, love and may your heart take wingless flight in the year ahead. xoxo

I love Katie Melua’s cover of the Cure’s ‘Just like Heaven’. The guitar accompaniment is enchanting – it makes me want to pick up the guitar again, sore fingertips and all!

BBC Proms September 10, 2010

Whenever I take the tube, I’ll notice the ad for the BBC prom. It’s pretty + picturesque and I’d always wondered what it was about. So when Junyi my flatmate told me about the tradition of promming and the BBC Proms several days ago, I jumped at the chance to watch the BBC Prom 72 featuring Wagner’s music on Wednesday night. My music teacher used to make me listen to Wagner as part of music theory and I skipped his classes frequently as I really dreaded spending my Saturday afternoons in the studio. But many thanks to the same teacher, I’ve grown to appreciate the genre. While at the souvenier store, I made sure to pick up a card for my teacher who inspired me to appreciate a genre that is not the easiest to appreciate.

I was up early this morning trying to get tickets to the Joshua Radin gig in the UK. Then I found this youtube video of a live performance of ‘Vegetable Car’ from his Simple Times album which made me go aww… Such a quirky and sweet inspiration.
