Look what I found – a lovely bunch of quotes from Quote Book:

By accident of fortune, a man may rule the world for a time, but by virtue of love, he may rule the world forever.

Lao Tzu.

My friends, if we tend to the things that are important in life, if we are right with those we love and behave in line with our faith, our lives will not be cursed with the aching throb of unfulfilled business. Our words will always be sincere, our embraces will be tight. We will never wallow in the agony of ‘I could have, I should have.’ We can sleep in a storm.

Mitch Albom, Have a little faith.

You come to love not by finding the perfect person, but by seeing an imperfect person perfectly.

Powerful thoughts May 29, 2010

Posted by silverlinedletters in mmmm....

I am a dreamer at heart. Sometimes it’s good and sometimes it’s bad when I let my mind wander a bit too much, preoccupying my poor mind with negative thoughts. This is a good reminder for me to think inspiring, thoughtful, powerful thoughts that are enabling and uplifting. Reckon there’s some truth when they say, it’s all in the mind!

Smell the roses April 6, 2010

Some of the best thinkers throughout history had some of their best thoughts while going for walks, playing cards with friends, little things things that generally would not be considered the hallmarks of busy people. It’s the ability to pause, to reflect, and relax, to let the mind wander, that’s perhaps the true sign of time mastery, for when the mind returns it’s often sharper and more efficient, but most important perhaps, happier than it was before.

– Scott Berkun on “The Cult of Busy”.

Just read an excellent passage on time managment and the appearance of being busy: In praise of nothingness. Worth a read 🙂

Being silly March 25, 2010

“I’m never the girl at the dinner party wearing the tight dress and the high heels,” she told the magazine. “It’s stressful to be someone’s version of beautiful. I feel much more comfortable being silly. As a girl you grow up and you want to be so attractive, and, truthfully, if you take that out of the equation and you just do what you’re interested in, you’re usually more attractive, anyway.”

– Keri Russel on the March Cover of Health Magazine

This reminds me of what my friend Karwei told me over dinner some time ago, that the ability to be silly and to laugh at yourself is important. It’s tiring to fit into a mold and I think being yourself even if you’re being silly is kinda great 😀

Alain de botton on twitter (via hoping for happy accidents) is one of my recently bookmarked sites.

Plenty of insightful tweets, some of which I share here:

I feel an instant bond with people who find it hard to fall and stay asleep. It suggests things get to them, as they do to me.

The hope on picking up a book: that it will tell us what we know but haven’t had time to think.

The best things are by-products February 18, 2010

Jessa Crispin on by-products:
I was having a conversation with a writer the other day, and he stated that the best things are always by-products. Happiness is a by-product, and I loved that he said that. You can plot your journey to success or happiness or wealth or whatever it is you’re looking for, but if you’re too focused on the end result, you’re going to miss anything good going on around you.

“Everybody can be great… Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace – A soul generated by love.”

Now these notecards from Notebookdoodles take my breath away! I fell in love with the site at first sight (accidental pun). First, I heart the exquisite and intricate font which adds to the character of the cards. Best of all, they contain ‘lil gems of wisdom:

I say, precious reminders have never come so pretty 🙂

The Joy Luck Club February 5, 2010

Today, I woke up at noon feeling like a relaxing Friday stay-in. I made my favourite kind of breakfast (a simple egg sandwich with forest fruit tea), picked a DVD, propped my lazy feet up and watched the The Joy Luck Club.

I loved the film, it was very thought-provoking. It made me better understand the bond I shared with my grandmother, my relationship with my mom, our history and traditions and most of all, the hopes mothers have for their daughters. Funny thing is, like the girls in the film, there are moments when I think my mother doesn’t know me but the heart of the matter is that they have so much age-old wisdom and they see us in ways that we think they don’t, and in a light that we may not even recognise ourselves.
