Dark chocolate mousse November 13, 2011

My mom has a sweet tooth, a particular weakness for chocolates. I always had a bit more resilience but for the whole of last week I had such a bad craving for chocolate that I ventured to the 3rd level (I work on the 2nd level) to dig into my friends’ stash of toblerone dark chocolates. I just made these today, from 60% dark lindt chocolate, I’m going into the office prepared this time 😉

When the two people who thus discover that they are on the same secret road are of different sexes, the friendship which arises between them will very easily pass – may pass in the first half hour – into erotic love. Indeed, unless they are physically repulsive to each other or unless one or both already loves elsewhere, it is almost certain to do so sooner or later. And conversely, erotic love may lead to Friendship between the lovers. But this, so far from obliterating the distinction between the two loves, puts it in a clearer light. If one who was first, in the deep and full sense, your Friend, is then gradually or suddenly revealed as also your lover you will certainly not want to share the Beloved’s erotic love with any third. But you will have no jealousy at all about sharing the Friendship. Nothing so enriches an erotic love as the discovery that the Beloved can deeply, truly and spontaneously enter into Friendship with the Friends you already had; to feel that not only are we two united by erotic love but we three or four or five are all travelers on the same quest, have all a common vision.

“I must learn to love the fool in me–the one who feels too much, talks too much, takes too many chances, wins sometimes and loses often, lacks self-control, loves and hates, hurts and gets hurt, promises and breaks promises, laughs and cries. It alone protects me against that utterly self-controlled, masterful tyrant whom I also harbor and who would rob me of human aliveness, humility, and dignity but for my fool.” — Theodore I. Rubin, MD

My internship run with George came to an end last friday. George truly stood out among the other lawyers, he epitomises the phrase ‘gentleman at the bar’. He would never allow his employees to fade into the background, he makes it a point to thank everybody, myself included, even if I’m an intern at the very bottom of the legal food chain. Just on thursday, he pulled me aside to give me pointers for taking Attendance Notes. Above all, he reminded me that law is about a service to society and that law is fun. I hope to always hold that close to my heart.

Book + Coffee = Happy

Best Society by Philip Larkin

When I was a child, I thought,
Casually, that solitude
Never needed to be sought.
Something everybody had,
Like nakedness, it lay at hand,
Not specially right or specially wrong,
A plentiful and obvious thing
Not at all hard to understand.

Then, after twenty, it became
At once more difficult to get
And more desired – though all the same
More undesirable; for what
You are alone has, to achieve
The rank of fact, to be expressed
In terms of others, or it’s just
A compensating make-believe.

Much better stay in company!
To love you must have someone else,
Giving requires a legatee,
Good neighbours need whole parishfuls
Of folk to do it on – in short,
Our virtues are all social; if,
Deprived of solitude, you chafe,
It’s clear you’re not the virtuous sort.

Viciously, then, I lock my door.
The gas-fire breathes. The wind outside
Ushers in evening rain. Once more
Uncontradicting solitude
Supports me on its giant palm;
And like a sea-anemone
Or simple snail, there cautiously
Unfolds, emerges, what I am.

How was your weekend?

I had one of the most relaxing and beautiful weekend spent in Brussels with dear Juliet. I think, some of the best friendships are forged when you travel and explore a foreign city together. I left for Brussels not quite knowing what to expect and over the course of the next two days, I fell in love with the museums, the Parc where Fall announced its presence in such glorious, golden splendour, the stunning Grand Place, the chocolates, the waffles, the mussels… While in Brussels, I turned off my phone, 3G, data-roaming, and disconnected in order to connect.

I am still smiling, just thinking about Brussels.

The words in the picture make out:
And a year later, we are still here to talk (about love)

This one made me smile and it reminds me of the lyrics of Ryan Huston’s Beautiful Day:

Cloudless skies, summer days
Feels just like it’s on the way

One of the best gifts in this windy, rainy weather is the warmth of glorious sunshine and the luminosity of bright blue cloudless skies that light my way as I trudge to school, fingers tightly crossed for good weather.

Today I felt like a millionaire just sitting in Juliet’s kitchen, munching on her old-school colourful biscuits, royce chocolate coated potato chips and stealing her chippy mint ice-cream. And we talked about anything and everything. Summer afternoons are made of days like these.

Walk in the rain

Smell flowers

Stop along the way

Build sandcastles

Go on field trips

Find out how things work

Tell stories

Say the magic words,

Trust the universe.”

It’s chinese new year in less than 12 hours! For me, chinese new year means crumbly melt-in-your-mouth pineapple tarts,  freshly baked almond cookies, sticky cake and all the little morsels of sinful delicious goodness. In the last few years ever since my paternal grandma passed on, I’ve been feeling a lil wistful every new year. All of us miss her presence and the feast she prepares every single year. But this year, I’ve never felt more loved. One of my favourite parts of the new year is the food and especially how we express our love through food. Thank you to all of you for showering me with delicious yummy goodness and most of all, for the thought 🙂

Have an awesome possum lunar new year!

xoxo
