A lawyer who makes a difference June 26, 2011

My internship run with George came to an end last friday. George truly stood out among the other lawyers, he epitomises the phrase ‘gentleman at the bar’. He would never allow his employees to fade into the background, he makes it a point to thank everybody, myself included, even if I’m an intern at the very bottom of the legal food chain. Just on thursday, he pulled me aside to give me pointers for taking Attendance Notes. Above all, he reminded me that law is about a service to society and that law is fun. I hope to always hold that close to my heart.

Book + Coffee = Happy

Best Society by Philip Larkin

When I was a child, I thought,
Casually, that solitude
Never needed to be sought.
Something everybody had,
Like nakedness, it lay at hand,
Not specially right or specially wrong,
A plentiful and obvious thing
Not at all hard to understand.

Then, after twenty, it became
At once more difficult to get
And more desired – though all the same
More undesirable; for what
You are alone has, to achieve
The rank of fact, to be expressed
In terms of others, or it’s just
A compensating make-believe.

Much better stay in company!
To love you must have someone else,
Giving requires a legatee,
Good neighbours need whole parishfuls
Of folk to do it on – in short,
Our virtues are all social; if,
Deprived of solitude, you chafe,
It’s clear you’re not the virtuous sort.

Viciously, then, I lock my door.
The gas-fire breathes. The wind outside
Ushers in evening rain. Once more
Uncontradicting solitude
Supports me on its giant palm;
And like a sea-anemone
Or simple snail, there cautiously
Unfolds, emerges, what I am.

An Ode to O May 1, 2011

I know I’m not there for you often
The absence adds to your frustration
But one smile from me
and that big teddy heart of yours softens

You talk to me while I sit in the dark
Make me laugh when I cry ‘oh shit, there’s a spark!’
My fear of the dark you find eccentric
Baby I think what we have is electric 😉

You fill my silly food cravings
Green tea with cranberry you’ve started drinking
I’m no domestic goddess but you don’t mind
Tho’ sometimes you must think she’s one odd female kind

Even though we straddle two continents
but my dear, that is never pertinent
Cause when push comes to shove
It’s you I want to walk down kallang bridge with, my love.

You chide me for having no surprises
For your patience you deserve the biggest prizes
The one thing I learnt from the times we fought
That the pen surely is mightier than the sword

So I put my thoughts into words
And I pray this time it’ll soothe instead of hurt
If it comes down to this please know,
Our love my dear, it can only grow.

(And it’s you I want to test my cold face theory with in the snow!)

There are a thousand reasons
Why I should give up
But I’m stubborn in the things I believe

– Everything in its time by Corrinne May

I was driving to school yesterday when ‘Everything in its time’ by Corrinne May started playing on my iPhone. The lyrics always speak to me. It takes a huge dose of courage to be honest with yourself  and to listen to what your heart says. Sometimes it takes guts to abandon a well-beaten path and to forge your own – to find yourself, to build your own happiness.

And on a completely unrelated but happy note, I discovered this really beautiful video on youtube. I love the fairy lights and Kelly Overton is quite a stunner!

You set it again, my heart’s in motion

Every word feels like a shooting star

I remember gushing about Adele’s ‘Make you feel my love’ to Juliet on an extended toilet break while studying in the library in Nov ’09. I barely knew the J then, but I’m glad she didn’t think I was a psycho gibbering away to her in the bathroom. I also remember listening to the song on loop in Dec ’09 and thinking about a certain someone. Then last year, in Dec ’10 I heard the song play in a Pizza Express outlet in Holborn, London. We’d just finished our final class of the semester at CTLS and were headed out for lunch. Christmas was just round the corner, the atmosphere was festive, the decorations were up and we were in the middle of happy chatter when I heard the opening piano chords. That was one single moment of peace and gratitude that I’ll be content to remember by. A year ago in ’09, I’d just submitted my application for exchange and was missing someone. A year later, I was still on my own but I found a happiness from my independence and a comfortable rhythm that I’d fallen into while living in a fast-paced, charming city away from home.

Funny how, one song can uncover, from the recesses of your brain, so many memories. What is one song you associate with a moment or remember by?

We celebrated Geri’s birthday last night – just Steph, Geri and myself. I love how conversation flows so easily with them, it’s always so effortless and honest and we’re completely comfortable being our silly selves – bad jokes and laugh out loud laughter.

I love how our friendship has evolved over the years from primary school speech & drama classes to prefects’ campfires thru to university and post-uni. The both of them inspire me with their kindness and ambition, they temper me with their sensibilities and are also people I respect. Come to think of it, these are friends I’ll really like to keep, for life ❤

Banana Hazelnut Muffins January 15, 2011

I found this recipe while daydreaming in class last week. The shot of espresso powder got me intrigued and I had new bakeware (silicon oven mitts + heart shaped silicon baking tray from Geri for christmas), so when this lazy weekend rolled around and I was not content to spend it catching up on school work (though I really, really should), I zipped off to the market in the morning and came home with a bunch of ripened bananas.

Breakfast food for the next week! I replaced the walnuts in the recipe with hazelnuts and also cut the sugar to 1/2 cup. I used 4 bananas, techically 3.5 because I ate half a banana while prepping the batter.

Making good use of my new bakeware. The silicon tray is incredible – the muffins ‘pop’ out easily and washing up’s a breeze. Definitely all that it’s CRACKED UP to be!

Have a beautiful weekend xoxo

Where there is love January 10, 2011

Where there is love the heart is light,
Where there is love the day is bright,
Where there is love there is a song
To help when things are going wrong,
Where there is love there is a smile
To make all things seem more worthwhile,
Where there is love there’s a quiet peace,
A tranquil place where turmoils cease
Love changes darkness into light
And makes the heart take “wingless flight” –
Oh, blest are they who walk in love
They also walk with God above,
And when man walks with God again
There shall be Peace on Earth for men.

– Helen Steiner Rice

I really like this poem by Helen Rice, it’s one of those poems that brings my heart and everything else to a still. It fills me with a quiet sense of gratitude.

Today, my little happy moment was when I got 5 lobster puffs and 3 egg tarts for 5 dollars from the Marine Parade Hawker Centre. They were deliciously yummy! I decided to treat myself on the first day of school. While it’s bittersweet to be back home in Singapore, for everything there’s a season; I’ve had plenty of time to enjoy, explore and discover in the last 5 months. Now it’s time to return to school and to do the best I can for my final semester (and not sleep walk through it as I’m inclined to do).

Accompanying this poem is a cover of one of my favourite songs – “Your Song”. While I was on the long, cold journey back from a day of jam-packed shopping at the boxing day sales in London, the song came on and I remember being momentarily blown away (not by the wind, but by the song of course).

Where there is love, there is a song

To help when things go wrong…

Happy new year lovelies! Here’s to peace, love and may your heart take wingless flight in the year ahead. xoxo
